Tales from the Troubador

Thursday, October 7, 2010

I took B to her very first outing at the Troubador this week to see Jenny and Johnny perform. It was an incredible show and even though I never ever get star-struck, we spent the night rubbing elbows with Kirsten Dunst and (hold your breath) Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart (I was instantly a tween again)!! Jenny and Johnny played their whole new album, I'm Having Fun Now, and Jenny also ended the show with some older songs from Acid Tongue and Rabbit Fur Coat. I have to definitely admit it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. Edward Cullen and Bella Swan included.

P.S. If you are an L.A. Resident and couldn't make the Palladium or the Troubador Shows there is a FREE show this Sunday evening in Echo Park. Click here for details!

Pali House Paradise

Friday, September 3, 2010

The Pali House in West Hollywood, CA is one of my absolute favorite spots and one of the only bars that I will cross La Brea to go to. I brunch, lunch and drink here. It is an urban lodge with a french industrial twist that screams lounge by the fire. sip on a kir royale. listen to cat power remixed by the DJ. order oysters on the half shell. If you live in Los Angles and haven't visited the Pali House please do, and report back. And if you're a regular like me, I look forward to meeting you by the vintage bicycles or photo booth with a champagne cocktail in hand.

We're Moving!

Friday, August 13, 2010

Scout and I are packin' up the Parkman Apartment this weekend and moving to a more pup-friendly place! Don't worry - we're still staying in our beloved Silverlake but this time we've got a house with a yard and a wrap around porch! (And a closer proximity to the puppy playground!) I'm already dreaming up all the ways to decorate the new space and although this weekend will be mad-packing-moving-hectic-city, hopefully by Monday we'll be settled.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I'll Meet You in San Luis

Monday, June 21, 2010

Sometimes difficult things happen, and sometimes you realize you have really great friends who will throw you in a car, roll down the windows, turn up the stereo, and take you on an adventure to cheer you up. C & M took me on a road-trip up the coast to the quaint town of San Luis Obispo (SLO to all the local yokels). We spent the day thrifting in second-hand book stores, sampling the oatmeal chocolate chip ice cream at local bakery, Cowboy Cookie N' Grub, discovered Bubble Gum Alley and ended the day at Pismo Beach collecting shells and skipping stones. I am lucky to have such thoughtful and funny people in my life and I highly recommend taking a trip to SLO the next time you're itching to have an out-of-L.A.adventure.

Tales from the Flower Mart

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Last weekend I arose before the rooster crowed (OK - maybe it was 8 AM but still early for this girl on a Saturday) and headed downtown to the Los Angeles Flower Mart.  It was truly a remarkable experience as I felt sort of like Alice from Wonderland in her Willy Wonka of flower shops. I found blue roses, purple cabbage, queen Anne's lace and most beautiful flamingo-pink ranunculus which ended up gracing every nook and cranny of my apartment for the Pop-Up Art Show.  I do say, it is quite a privilege to go spelunking for flowers with friends on a Saturday morning, and I highly recommend visiting this secret downtown garden if you dare to get up early enough. Also, Note to Self: Bring $ - it costs only one dollar to enter but the flower stands only take that cash-money, honey.

Follow the Yellow Brook Road

When I was a petite cher, mon poppa would take me to the corner video store every Saturday to pick out a movie. At the age of 2 I choose The Wizard of Oz and never looked back. Over the next consecutive 104 Saturdays, Dorothy and Toto were my exclusive candy of choice, my little girl joie de vivre! My father kept allowing me to make my own decision on those Saturday afternoons (before having chocolate croissants and Orangina at bread and chocolate, and after daughter and pop library visits) in the hopes that I would actually make the choice to choose something, (anything) else. I don't know if it was Dorothy's ruby slippers, the sparkle of emerald city or Judy Garland's sweet Somewhere over the Rainbow, but I was hooked. To this day I still think that Wizard of Oz is a perfect and sublimely magical story.

And this past weekend I went on a magical adventure to The Garden of Oz in the Hollywood Hills. Check out the photos below!

Love and Hope and most importantly, Jenny.

I came home last night to the world's best message on my answering machine; my best gal B has somehow managed to snag us two front row tickets to the Jenny Lewis Haiti Benefit at the well known Los Angeles venue, Largo at the Coronet. WHAT?! I cancelled all plans immedietment and feverishly skipped to the little theater after work tonight. Largo was decorated with Christmas lights and hipster boys in vests selling homemade cookies. B and I sat back and listened to one of the most amazing music sets I have ever heard. Jenny played with many guests including Rilo Kiley bassist Jason Boesel, Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond, boyfriend Jonathan Rice, best friend Morgan Nagler of Whispertown 2000 and Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink of Azure Ray (my personal favorite). We were serenaded for over two hours and the artists took turns playing their songs, both old and new. It was a night filled with magic and hope and lots and lots of love. I feel so lucky to be part of a community that uses its artistic influence to make a difference in helping make this currently dilapidated world, a much much better place.

And that's my soapbox for today!

Oh, and this petite blogger is back. Apologies for the long respite - many lovely things coming your way!

Happy 2010!

Roller Girl

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

Rollerskating is one of my all time favorite pastimes. I love the outfits, the funky old school music, and how it always make me feel like I'm at a 3rd grade birthday party!

This past year I discovered the monthly Roller Disco Party at World on Wheels in east L.A. The rink is attached to a full bar and everyone looks straight out off the set of Dazed and Confused. I love this place so much I even had my birthday party there last year!
