Artist Profile: Anne Jordan

1

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Anne Jordan grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina and now currently resides in Los Angeles. Anne is a painter, a writer, and an actor. She recently launched her new website, and I had the privilege of getting a tour of her work space as well as a quick interview! Check it out below!

What made you want to become an artist?
I never thought "I want to be an artist." That's just who I am, who I've always been. But my mom was definitely an inspiration. She has a tremendous flair for design and taught me everything I know about color. And I also have three brothers who are very artistic. I've been surrounded by art my whole life

Who are some of your favorite artists?
I love David Hockney. One of my all-time favorite books is David Hockney: A Drawing Retrospective. It's his colored pencil drawings and I can't say exactly what it is I love about them, but they definitely do it for me. I have spent hours pouring over that book. I think all of his works are created with joy, and that's what I respond to. It just seems like he has fun when he draws and paints and that's the way it should be. I keep hoping I'll run into him at Whole Foods. I also like a lot of Alice Neel's stuff, and if you're familiar with her work, you'll know I stole her ultramarine lines. She lays in her paintings with ultramarine blue. Her paintings are very psychological. I get a kick out of the nude self-portrait she did when she was in her eighties. Her breasts are drooping down to her knees. Frida Kahlo's portraits inspire me too. I think she was very daring and honest. Plus, I just love those paper scrolls she used. Balthus is an interesting artist. He did some amazing things with color. Like he'd paint a girl's skin with a grayish tint and use bright colors for her clothes, and the clothes would seem almost to glow (because of the contrast).

What inspires you?
Bookstores. A great exhibit in a museum. Someone's face. A shady street. But mostly just feeling happy. Sometimes when it's a beautiful day and I'm feeling very alive and the feeling is almost too much, I'll think: I want to paint!

For all the Los Angeles artists out there - where do you buy your art supplies?
The Blue Rooster on Vermont. They're convenient, and everything is reasonably priced, especially the canvases. The people who work there are nice. But it's a small store, and sometimes they don't have what I need so then I make the trek to Pearl on La Cienega.

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend. I spent a lot of time listening to the new Regina Spektor C.D. I have always loved Regina but never like this. Her new album is incredible! Check out my favorite song here!

Hello, Cup Cake!

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Cupcakes are the perfect treat for any occasion. I enjoy grabbing them with friends, taking them on picnics, and making them for parties. I have always joked about creating my own Los Angeles Cupcake Map and then yesterday, I stumbled upon one!

The Great Los Angeles Cup Cake Map

The cupcake map is rather extensive (albeit awesome!), so here is a list of my own personal favorite cupcake joints around town. I tried to choose ones in different areas so your drive-time to cupcake heaven is minimal! Enjoy!

Hot Cakes (West L.A.)
Sprinkles Cupcakes (Beverly Hills)
Joan's on Third (West Hollywood)
Buttercake Bakery (Century City)
Vanilla Bake Shop (Santa Monica)
Bluebird Cafe (Culver City)
Cafe at the Vista (Los Feliz)
Lark Cake Shop (Silverlake)

Raining Jane

0

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Last night I had the privilege of being invited to one of my favorite L.A. venues, the The Hotel Cafe, to catch Raining Jane's last residency show.

Raining Jane is an all girl eclectic rock-folk band from California that have been touring for 10 years! The girls rocked out last night and even played a slow acoustic version of Pat Benetar's " Love is a Battlefield". I absolutely encourage you to check them out; the girls have a lot of heart and soul and their shows are just pure joy. Sara Bareilles, a close friend of RJ's, joined them for their last song and it was such a treat! I came home with some awesome free shwag including an adorable Raining Jane totebag! Check out their music here:

Time Traveler's Wife

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

I saw this trailer last night and can't stop thinking about it! Rachel McAdams is one of my all time favorite actresses and I bought this book last night simply so I can read it before the movie comes out in August! It looks like the grown-up version of THE NOTEBOOK and I will be there opening day for sure!

Moodboard Monday

Monday, June 22, 2009

Happy Monday, everyone! I had a very relaxing weekend cooking and unwinding with friends. The highlight of my weekend was having breakfast at my absolute favorite French restaurant in silverlake, Cafe Stella, that recently opened up for Sunday morning brunch. The Lemon Ricotta pancakes and the Cucumber Spritzer were both to die for! I also rediscovered my love for Kings of Convenience which was playing in the background at the Cafe. I sort of feel like this girl today!

I had been craving one of these amazing bando headbands for the longest time, when the lovely Bride to be Bree gave me one as a maid of honor present! I put this on for the dancing portion of the wedding and haven't been able to take it off since!

Here are some of my other favorites!

These are all hand-made with vintage jewelery and materials. I think they make very unique and lovely gifts!

Friday, June 12, 2009

This weekend I'm off to throw my best friend from summer camp a surprise bachelorette party at the camp we grew up going to AND my favorite place in the world - Camp Huckins! (If you ever need a girls summer camp recommendation, look no further!) There will be a lot of smore eating, pontoon boat riding, skinny dipping and running around with sparklers! Have a great one!

Poladroid

0

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Polaroid Pictures are my absolute favorite. I try to bring my Polaroid camera wherever I go but sometimes it's just not practical to carry it around. I recently discovered the Poladroid website which allows you to take your normal digital pictures and turn them into Polaroids. It's really fun and easy to use and gives your everyday photo some extra pizazz!

* Helpful Hint: You can only download 10 Polaroids PER computer, so use them sparingly!

500 Days of Summer

1

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

OK folks, bare with me for a little shameless promotion! 500 DAYS OF SUMMER is a movie I spent 3 years working on and guess what? It's AWESOME. I feel really privileged to have worked on it from start to finish, and am so proud of all the people who turned it into what will hopefully be, the hit of the summer!

500 DAYS OF SUMMER opens in Los Angeles and New York City on July 17th with other cities quickly to follow. Check out the trailer below!

The Red Balloon

0

The Red Balloon was one of my all time favorite books as a child. The story is of a young boy who discovers a stray red balloon which seems to have a mind of its own on the streets of Paris. The two become inseparable, yet the worlds harsh realities finally interfere. After the book became a huge success world-wide, the French author, Albert Lamorisse, wrote and directed the movie, Le Ballon Rouge, which came out in 1956.

It's a simple story but an incredibly magical and beautiful book and film. To this day, balloons continue to hold a special place in my heart!
